Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to help you plan your journey

Booking

Understanding the reservation process helps you secure the right vehicle for your trip. We outline what happens when you book, how confirmation works, and what to expect before pickup.

How do I book a vehicle with 4Drive Italy?

Select your pickup location, dates, and times on the homepage. Browse available vehicles, choose one that suits your needs, and complete the booking form. You pay a booking advance online by card to confirm the reservation. Within a few hours, you receive a voucher by email with all details, including the local rental company contact and pickup instructions.

What information do I receive after booking?

Your voucher includes pickup location and time, vehicle details, rental company contact, balance due at pickup, accepted payment methods for the balance, and any additional services you requested. Keep the voucher accessible on your phone or print a copy to present at the counter.

Can I modify my reservation dates or pickup location?

Contact us at [email protected] as soon as possible with your booking reference. We work with the local rental company to accommodate changes when feasible. Some modifications may affect the total amount depending on availability and the new dates.

Payment and Advance

Payment happens in two stages: an online booking advance to confirm the reservation, and a balance at pickup. The method for the balance varies by vehicle and is clearly stated during booking.

How much do I pay online when booking?

You pay a booking advance by card through our secure payment system. This confirms your reservation. The remaining balance is paid when you collect the vehicle. The advance amount and balance are shown during the booking process and in your voucher.

What payment methods are accepted for the balance at pickup?

This depends on the specific vehicle you book. Some accept debit card and cash, others require a credit card. The accepted methods are displayed during booking and listed in your voucher. Check the payment methods page for detailed guidance. We cannot accept cash online for the booking advance.

What if I only have a debit card?

Many vehicles in our selection accept debit cards for the balance and any holds. Check the payment information for each vehicle during booking. If you plan to rent a vehicle requiring a credit card, consider increasing your debit card limit before travel to cover any holds the rental company may place.

Deposit and Credit Card

A deposit is a hold placed on your card by the rental company as security. It is separate from insurance or coverage. The amount and card type required vary by vehicle.

Do all vehicles require a deposit hold?

No. Some vehicles in our selection have no deposit requirement. Others require a hold on a credit or debit card. The deposit requirement and amount are shown for each vehicle during booking. A no-deposit vehicle still has a damage excess; these are independent parameters.

When is the deposit released?

The rental company releases the hold after you return the vehicle in the agreed condition. The time for funds to reappear in your account depends on your bank, typically 7 to 14 days. If there is damage, the company may deduct repair costs up to the excess amount before releasing the remainder.

What card do I need for a deposit hold?

It varies by vehicle. Some accept debit cards, others require a credit card in the main driver's name. Check the vehicle details during booking. Prepaid cards are usually not accepted for holds.

Documents and Age

You must present valid documents at pickup. Requirements are checked by the local rental company when you sign the rental agreement.

What documents do I need at pickup?

Bring your driving licence, valid for at least one year, and a passport or ID card. An International Driving Permit is recommended if your licence is not in the Latin alphabet. The card used for payment must be in the main driver's name. The rental company verifies these documents before handing over the keys.

Is there a minimum age to rent?

Most vehicles require the driver to be at least 21 years old with a licence held for one year. Some larger or specialist vehicles have higher age requirements, such as 25 or 28. Age limits and any young driver conditions are shown in the vehicle details during booking.

Can I add an additional driver?

Yes. Additional drivers are a paid extra, added during booking or at the rental counter. Each additional driver must present a valid licence and meet the same age requirements as the main driver. The fee is paid at pickup.

Pickup and Return

Pickup happens at the location and time you selected during booking. The local rental company hands over the vehicle and you sign the rental agreement on the spot.

Where do I collect the vehicle?

Pickup location depends on the rental company. Some have desks at airport terminals, others operate from offices near the airport or in the city centre. A few offer delivery to your hotel. The exact address and directions are in your voucher. At Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, for example, some counters are in the terminal, others at nearby offices reached by shuttle.

What happens at pickup?

Present your voucher, documents, and payment card. The rental company checks your details, processes the balance payment and any deposit hold, then gives you the rental agreement to sign. You inspect the vehicle together and note any existing damage on the agreement. The company provides contact details for roadside assistance. Keys are handed over and you drive away.

What if my flight is delayed?

Contact the rental company using the phone number in your voucher as soon as you know about the delay. Most companies accommodate late arrivals if notified. If you miss the pickup window without notice, the reservation may be cancelled.

Driving in Italy

Italy has specific traffic rules and road types. Familiarising yourself with regulations, tolls, and parking norms makes your journey smoother.

What are the speed limits?

Urban areas: 50 km/h. Secondary roads: 90 km/h. Main roads: 110 km/h. Autostrade: 130 km/h. Lower limits apply in rain and for certain vehicle types. Cameras enforce limits strictly, especially in towns and on autostrade. Traffic drives on the right.

How do tolls work on autostrade?

Take a ticket at the entry barrier and pay at the exit toll booth by cash or card. The amount depends on distance travelled. The A1 from Rome to Florence, for instance, spans 275 km and tolls add up. Keep coins or a card ready. Some vehicles come with a Telepass device for automatic payment; check with the rental company.

Can I take the vehicle on a ferry to Sicily or Sardinia?

Ferry travel to Sicily or Sardinia requires prior approval from the rental company. Some allow it with advance notice, others do not. Inform us at booking or contact the rental company directly before making ferry reservations. Ferry to Malta also requires approval and may have additional insurance requirements.

Changes and Cancellation

Plans shift and we understand that flexibility matters. Contact us early if you need to adjust or cancel your booking.

Can I cancel my booking?

Yes. Cancellation terms depend on how far in advance you cancel and the specific rental company. Contact us at [email protected] with your booking reference. Refund amounts and conditions are outlined in the terms accepted at booking.

What if I return the vehicle early?

Returning early does not usually result in a refund for unused days. The rental agreement is based on the dates you booked. If you know in advance that you will return early, contact us to see if adjustments are possible before pickup.
