Terms and Conditions

Rules governing your booking with 4Drive Italy

These Terms and Conditions apply to all bookings made through 4Drive Italy. By completing a booking, you agree to these terms. Last updated: September 2026.

Scope

4Drive Italy provides a booking service that connects you with local rental companies operating in Italy. When you book through our platform, you enter into two separate agreements: one with 4Drive Italy for the booking service, and one with the rental company for the vehicle itself.

The rental agreement is signed at the point of collection. That agreement governs your use of the vehicle, insurance coverage, excess, and all operational matters. The rental company issues the vehicle and remains your primary contact during the rental period.

Our role is to facilitate the booking and provide you with a voucher containing all relevant details. We do not own or operate the vehicles.

Bookings and the Rental Agreement

Once you complete a booking on our site, you receive a voucher by email. This voucher includes the rental company name, collection location, contact details, vehicle details, and any special conditions that apply to your booking.

At the time of collection, the rental company presents a rental agreement for your signature. You must read this agreement carefully. It sets out the terms under which the vehicle is provided, including insurance coverage, excess amounts, mileage limits, fuel policy, and restrictions on use.

Any damage to the vehicle must be recorded in the rental agreement at the time of collection. Inspect the vehicle thoroughly before driving away. The rental company is responsible for documenting the condition of the vehicle and for any disputes regarding damage.

If the rental company cannot provide the booked vehicle due to unforeseen circumstances, they will offer a comparable alternative. If no suitable alternative is available, you are entitled to a refund of the advance payment.

Advance Payment and Balance

When you book through 4Drive Italy, you pay a booking advance online by card. This advance secures your reservation. Cash payments are not accepted online.

The remaining balance is due at the time of collection. The method of payment for the balance depends on the specific vehicle you have booked. Acceptable methods are stated clearly during the booking process and in your voucher.

For some vehicles, the rental company accepts debit cards or cash for the balance. For others, a credit card may be required. Check your voucher before travelling. If you do not have a credit card and one is required, consider increasing the limit on your debit card or arranging a credit card before your trip.

Payment requirements are linked to individual vehicles, not to vehicle categories. Two similar cars may have different payment conditions depending on the rental company providing them.

Deposit Conditions

The rental company may block a deposit on a payment card at the time of collection. This deposit is a hold against potential damage, fuel charges, toll fees, or traffic fines. It is not a payment - the funds remain in your account but are temporarily unavailable.

The amount of the deposit and the type of card required vary by vehicle. These details are shown during booking and in your voucher. The deposit is a separate matter from the excess. Even if a vehicle is offered with no deposit, an excess still applies to any damage claim.

The rental company releases the deposit after the vehicle is returned and inspected, provided there are no outstanding charges. The time taken for the release depends on your card issuer, typically between three and ten business days.

Drivers and Documents

The person named in the booking must be the main driver and must present a valid driving licence at collection. A foreign licence is accepted, but an International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your national licence.

Additional drivers can be added at the rental desk. This is a paid service arranged directly with the rental company. All drivers must meet the age and licence requirements stated in the rental agreement.

You must also present a payment card and proof of identity, such as a passport. The rental company will not release the vehicle without these documents.

Use of the Vehicle

The vehicle must be used in accordance with the rental agreement. Driving is permitted on public roads in Italy. Speed limits are 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on secondary roads, 110 km/h on main roads, and 130 km/h on autostrade. Traffic drives on the right.

Taking the vehicle to other EU countries or Switzerland is generally allowed, but you must inform the rental company in advance and check the rental agreement for any restrictions. Additional documentation or insurance may be required.

Taking the vehicle on a ferry to Sardinia or Sicily requires written approval from the rental company. This approval must be arranged in advance of your trip. Ferry travel to other destinations may be restricted - check your rental agreement.

Off-road driving, racing, and use for driving tuition are prohibited. The vehicle must not be used to carry hazardous materials or for any illegal purpose.

Changes and Cancellation

If you need to change your booking dates, collection location, or vehicle type, contact us by email at [email protected] as soon as possible. Changes are subject to availability and may incur additional charges.

Cancellation terms vary depending on the specific booking. Some bookings allow free cancellation up to a certain number of days before collection; others have stricter terms. The cancellation policy for your booking is stated during the booking process and in your confirmation email.

If you do not collect the vehicle and do not notify us in advance, the booking is treated as a no-show and the advance payment is not refunded.

Liability

4Drive Italy is liable only for the booking service we provide. We are not liable for the condition of the vehicle, the conduct of the rental company, delays in vehicle availability, or any events that occur during the rental period.

The rental company is responsible for the vehicle, insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance. Any claims related to the vehicle, damage, accidents, or injury must be directed to the rental company.

We are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, including loss of enjoyment, travel delays, or accommodation costs arising from issues with the vehicle or rental company.

Complaints

If you experience a problem during your rental, contact the rental company immediately using the contact details provided in your voucher. They are best placed to resolve operational issues such as vehicle faults, billing disputes, or damage claims.

If the matter is not resolved to your satisfaction, or if your complaint relates to the booking service itself, contact us at [email protected]. Include your booking reference, a description of the issue, and any supporting evidence such as photographs or correspondence.

We will investigate your complaint and respond within a reasonable timeframe. Our aim is to resolve disputes fairly and promptly.

Governing Law

These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of Italy. Any disputes arising from your booking or use of our service are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Italian courts.

The rental agreement you sign with the rental company is also governed by Italian law. If you have a dispute with the rental company, that dispute is handled under Italian law and through the rental company's own complaints and legal procedures.
